An entrance begins before the gate. The width of the approach, the shadow cast by a wall and the first glimpse beyond a threshold all influence how a place is understood.
Scale before spectacle
A small entrance can carry a strong identity without becoming monumental. A clear opening, a sheltered pause and a legible relationship between pedestrian and vehicle movement often matter more than an oversized gesture.
Material as continuity
Stone, earth and metal can connect an arrival to its surroundings. Their value lies in proportion, texture and the care of their junctions as much as in colour.
A beginning, not an object
The threshold belongs to a sequence. Its design is strongest when it prepares us for the spaces that follow.
